SOPHIE'S MITZVAH PROJECT
The Bar and Bat Mitzvah process is, among other things, a time to begin doing good deeds. The word "mitzvah" means commandment in Hebrew. What are we commanded to do? Six hundred and thirteen different acts, to be precise, according to the Torah. But the word also refers to any act of human kindness.

A few words from Sophie about her mitzvah project:
The problem of hunger is a world-wide issue that has been occurring for many years. About 460,000 people in my town, San Diego, are hungry, 42.2 million Americans are hungry, and about 795 million people in the world are hungry. Hunger is a hard problem to solve because it is caused by problems such as poverty, job insecurity, food shortages, and climate change, but by helping provide food for those in need I can help take a step in the right direction.

Ever since I volunteered for the first time in a food pantry, this problem stood out to me. It was hard to believe 1 in 6 Americans had to deal with this problem daily where as I am able to have 3 meals in front of me every day. I wanted to help the people in need. So for my mitzvah project I decided to volunteer in food pantries to help stock food and work at food distributions. So far I have worked with the Hunger Project, Hand Up Food Pantry, and The San Diego Food Bank. Hopefully a couple extra hands on deck will help the people who are hungry get as much food as possible.
